AI and ChatGPT are all the rage right now, with dire predictions of further human replacement by machines; but have you tried using the current crop of website ‘Chat Bots’? A more frustrating user experience would be hard to design, with the first few interactions confirming the sense that you are being shepherded towards the three or four answers the ‘bot’ can actually offer – most of which will try to sell you something. An enquiry with any nuance or specificity spits you out of the system and leaves you floundering back to the FAQs in despair.

Watch Collecting is 100% online but we are also 100% human. If you send in a watch enquiry, the first thing you receive is a phone call. If you are unavailable, we may email, WhatsApp, or text, but we will speak to you in person eventually. Watch Collecting is a new concept to many of our users, so a phone call can explain the process, addressing any specific concerns they may have. It is part of our KYC system, allowing us to establish the ownership history of the watch to be sold, its service record, and any other pertinent details. A conversation can be had regarding price expectations vs current market levels, and the owner's motivation to sell. Most importantly, it is about building relationships.

Following the initial consignment meeting, a traditional auctioneer will have little client contact in the weeks or months leading up to a sale day. At Watch Collecting, the compressed timeframe means we may speak to a seller multiple times during the days of the auction and during post-sale follow-up. A ‘live’ call with a seller is so crucial to our process that we will not list a watch if we have not had a conversation – a world away from the experience of other ‘user-upload’ online marketplaces.

It is no surprise that the majority of our sellers are referrals. A conversation with a real person builds rapport, understanding, and trust in a way that emails and messaging cannot. After a single sale, a user feels that they know us, and we know them. Being an international 24/7 business means that first contact is, by necessity, via a web form but the response will be in-person.
